Abstract
The purpose of this study is to compare the treatment group receiving imagery rescripting combined with cognitive restructuring(IR+CR) and the treatment group receiving imagery rescripting without cognitive restructuring(IR). Individuals with high social anxiety were randomly assigned to IR+CR, IR, and the control group. The results showed that IR+CR led to significant more improvements in negative self-image vividness and core belief than IR and the control group. Also, IR+CR led to significant more improvements in negative self-image distress and traumatic early memory distress than the control group. IR showed a significant trend to decrease in negative self-image distress and traumatic early memory distress than the control group. There were no significant differences in negative self-image vividness and core belief between IR and the control group. There was no significant difference between the groups at follow-up assessment after 1 week. The results indicated that, at least in a single session context, it may be more effective to precede cognitive restructuring to imagery rescripting. Second, changes in longstanding core beliefs and social anxiety symptoms may require a number of sessions of imagery rescripting. Finally, implications and limitations of this study and suggestions for future study were discussed.
